American Squid Game Is On The Way

According to Deadline, David Fincher has officially signed on for the English version of Squid Game. This is the first scripted expansion of the Korean series but it’s not actually the first time that the franchise grew. In addition to getting a Season 2 in the very near future, there’s also already the unscripted series Squid Game: The Challenge. That expansion has also already been greenlit for a second season, though just when it will launch is still not official. There is also a video game franchise that is slowly growing.

It seems like Squid Game and David Fincher are a perfect match. The series definitely has some rather dark themes and tones that fit in with what the famed director has worked on before. The true crime thriller Zodiac was Among the projects with a similar tone and feel. He was also the man behind the 1997 Michael Douglas thriller, The Game. That movie had Douglas believe he was caught up in some sort of crime syndicate that was framing him for murder, it turned out the whole thing was a kind of game that was meant to make him realize the life he’d been living was without any color or joy. With this new Americanized Squid Game, things will go in a different direction than The Game since the death and destruction is real.

Fincher has had a deal with Netflix for quite a while, and since he signed on, there has been talk that he has been working on something related to Squid Game. However, initial reports were that he was making a movie and that it might have even just been an expansion of the original series in the same setting. However, it’s now been finalized as a series and will instead have a new setting.

For now, while an American Squid Game is coming, just when it will hit Netflix is a mystery. Plot details are also still very much under wraps. With things ramping up and an official announcement, those details may be coming sooner rather than later. In the meantime, fans of the original series have the launch of Season 2 on December 26. And when that season ends, there will be plenty more to come, considering the Korean superhit has already been renewed for a third and fourth season.

Which Squid Game Death Was the Most Heartbreaking?

Honestly, I’d say the marble game in itself was absolutely heartbreaking. I was ugly crying my whole way through that episode as characters such as Ji-yeong, Ali, and Il-nam (at the time, before we knew he was involved with the games) faced death through sacrifice for the other player, manipulation, and everything in between.
